Ask an Expert - Forum > Paper recommendation for charcoal/pastel with erasing

I use charcoal and pastels. I need a professional paper that allows erasing without leaving marks. What would you recommend?

Both charcoal and pastel work requires a medium textured paper which allows for blending and multi layering. We highly recommend Rives BFK, Coventry Rag Vellum and Legion Drawing & Framing.

Coventry Rag Vellum is a machine made, 100% cotton paper whose vellum surface allows for multiple layers. This paper holds up well to erasing because the surface is harder than other cotton papers.

Rives BFK is a mould made, 100% cotton paper that is extremely versatile. The papers texture is ideal for both charcoal and pastels and the surface is slightly softer than Coventry Rag.

Legion Drawing & Framing is a machine made, 100% cotton paper that is also popular for charcoal and pastels. This paper is an excellent choice for artists who want to work BIG. Legion Drawing & Framing is available in roll widths of 60" & 72". Out of the three recommendations, this paper has the softest surface and requires using a soft eraser. If you erase often or with medium to high pressure, we recommend going with a different option.

Out of the three paper options, we recommend Rives BFK charcoal/pastel work with medium to heavy erasing.

Not all erasers are built the same. We highly recommend using General Pencils Factis soft or extra soft erasers which are easy on cotton fiber based papers.
