Ask an Expert - Forum > New to using Yupo Translucent - starting and finishing advice

Hi Legion Paper,

I'm new to using Yupo and am about to do a large project on the Translucent paper. Some artists say to spray the paper with a mixture of alcohol and water or soapy water before you begin your painting. Do you recommend either of these as a first step? As I was handling the Yupo roll, I did notice a fine white residue that had been transferred to the nitrile gloves that I was wearing.

Also, once the work is completed, I have a Krylon Gallery Series UV Archival matte varnish on hand that is used for a variety of media, including watercolor. I've seen other watercolor varnishes recommended here, so will this particular varnish be a good choice for use on Yupo Translucent?

Many thanks,
Amy

It’s recommended to clean the surface with some rubbing alcohol or diluted dish soap (such as Dawn) to remove any debris and/or oil from hands that might interfere with the media you’ll be using.

The Krylon spray you mentioned below can be used to fix your work to YUPO. Others have also used the Krylon Crystal Clear UV spray and the Lascaux Fixativ with excellent results.

If you search through the forum you’ll find a bunch of tips from other artists using YUPO that might be helpful to you.

Hi Legion!

Thanks for your reply. I'm delighted that the UV Archival Matte varnish I already have on hand can be used with watercolor on Yupo.

For surface preparation cleaning, would you recommend straight rubbing alcohol, or diluted? I would likely prefer that to using dish soap since my final project may be up to 90" H, so ensuring that I removed all the soap before painting might be a bit daunting.

A follow up question -- I handled my Yupo roll very carefully when cutting the length I needed. I then used acid free artists' tape carefully along the edges to tape this 90"H section from my Yupo roll onto the wall. I smoothed it out carefully, but there is a repeating horizontal ripple throughout the length of the roll. Is that typical with these translucent rolls when they are taped to a vertical surface for working? Do you anticipate that once free of the tape that these ripples will flatten back out? At the moment it is reminiscent of a poorly stretched canvas, unfortunately.

I have been looking at other posts and just purchased a 5x7 pack so as to experiment further with the material before tackling the 90"H final work. My initial studies reveal that I can work vertically with watercolor much more successfully than I anticipated, as long as I don't waterlog the media.

Many thanks,
Amy
