Ask an Expert - Forum > Stonehenge Oil color coming through paper
Hi Shawn,
We have to delve deeper into this issue and seek the advice from some of our oil experts because we don't have any experience using Galkyd. We'll post what we learn here. Stay tuned!

Shawn, Out of curiosity, how is the finished work mounted and what is the support?

The pieces I'm referring to haven't been mounted yet. I do have a few mounted to ACM panels using Rublev Mounting Adhesive (https://www.naturalpigments.com/mounting-adhesive.html). To date I've had no problems. Sometime soon I'd like to try mounting some to birch plywood panels with GAC 100 (https://goldenartistcolors.com/products/gac-100-acrylic-primer-and-extender). I wanted inquire about the issue I'm seeing before the backs get hidden from view.

Hi Shawn,
We've spoken to a few oil painters with expertise using Galkyd and all of them are curious as to why a separate coat of Galkyd is being applied to the paper as a top coat layer. Typically it is mixed in with the oil paint.
Perhaps applying Galkyd (which contains a fairly powerful mineral spirit) directly to the paper is potentially affecting the bleed-through barrier in the paper?
We'd love to discuss your process with you. Can you reach out to us at info [at] legionpaper.com and send us your contact number?

Could it be caused by the Galkyd I'm using in my initial layer? Beyond that I only use high quality oil paint and small amounts linseed oil here and there.
My main concern would be how it might affect adhesive if the finished painting were mounted.
