Ask an Expert - Forum > durable paper for gesso

I've been using Strathmore smooth bristol 2 and 3 ply (400 series) which I coat on both sides with black gesso. One one side, I will put 4-5 coats of gesso. Even with the 3 ply paper there is some rippling to the paper after the gesso dries.

I have also used your Lenox paper which does not ripple but I would like something heavier and with less texture on both sides--- suggestions??? Thank you!

Hi David,

Coventry Rag Smooth 335gsm and Stonehenge 320gsm are both great choices. Both papers are dimensionally stable and will not buckle. Both are 100% cotton and have been used for screenprinting for decades and in some cases have handled over 100 colors without buckling.
