I have been using Murillo Fabriano many years as ground for acrylic underpainting & pastel. Lately acrylic makes it cockle so severely that it's too wavy to apply the pastel. Can you recommend a paper that will not buckle from acrylic washes, remaining flat enough to pastel on top?
The ideal paper for a wet multimedia piece must posses proper sizing as well as the ideal amount of surface texture and tooth. Using a paper that is sized specifically for watercolor will ensure that your piece will lay flat after both light and heavy washes. The best pastel papers offer a toothed surface which allows the pastel to be layered on top of itself multiple times. The finer the tooth, the fewer the layers that can be applied. Texture also comes into play here. The more textured the piece, the less detail your image will have. For example a Cold Press paper will take more layers than a Hot Press paper but will also have less detail compared to a Hot Press paper.
Two papers that are ideal for this application come from the same family. We recommend using either Stonehenge Printmaking or its watercolor offspring, Stonehenge Aqua. Stonehenge Printmaking is one of the most versatile papers out there, allowing acrylic washes and different drawing applications. Stonehenge Printmaking is renowned for its subtle texture and excellent performance in the colored pencil and pastel market.
Stonehenge Aqua the spawn of Stonehenge Printmaking has the characteristics of a printmaking paper but can also handle heavy acrylic washes without buckling or warping. Offered in both Cold Press and Hot Press, Stonehenge Aqua provides multimedia artists different texture and surface options to experiment on.
