Ask an Expert - Forum > Clay Coat Papers

Ten years ago, a fine art printer working in the same building where I had my studio, was printing on what he called, Clay Coat. A kaolin clay coated paper. It was fabulous for litho printing, and in my case, painting light washes of acrylic, to cut and use for collage. No other paper comes close to the desired results from this product. I have used Yupo, but it's not the same, as the paint does not sink in to the surface. The printer also mentioned it was being discontinued, I believe he said it was from France, and he was searching everywhere to find some to finish an edition. Over the years, I have looked everywhere, with no success. Perhaps the name is not correct, but I would love to find sheets of this paper. Clay Board is readily available, but not what I need for the work I am doing. Any information or suggestions on this paper would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Paula,

Over the past few decades paper mills have moved away from clay coated products to synthetic coated. Traditionally, mills would use either Kaolinite, calcium carbonate, Bentonite or talc in their coating process. Currently many papers are sized with calcium carbonate to create a more archival ph neutral sheet; however, this does not have the desired effect you are looking for.

After digging through the Legion archives we have found that we currently have stock of "Legion Art Coated Cover". This paper is machine-made in the USA, is 100% alpha cellulose, neutral pH, buffered with calcium carbonate, clay coated and has no deckles.

Please visit info@legionpaper.com for more information on acquiring samples and/or full sheets.
