Ask an Expert - Forum > Yupo as substrate for Duralar

I have been creating two types of paintings using Duralar and Yupo. Here are my questions:
1. My finished painting made directly on Duralar need to be affixed (with Golden semi-sloss gel medium?) on a white substrate. I had considered using Yupo for this purpose but have been advised against it by someone in technical support at Golden. I was told that the gel would never be able to dry completely and the adhesion properties might be compromised long term.
2. I have created several large paintings on Yupo as I love how the high fluid acrylics react on this surface. Do I need to use an acrylic spray varnish to protect with work? It is my intent for these painting to be framed under glass.
3. I am also painting on Duralar, then cutting up these paintings and using them for collage on Yupo. Again, I have been using the Golden semi-sloss gel medium as an adhesive. I just need to confirm that these works are not going to fall apart down the road in someone's home.
What advise can you give me regarding these questions.
If Yupo is not to be the substrate, what bright white hot-pressed paper would you suggest using that will not buckle when used as described?

I will look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Michele,

Thank you for your inquiry. We'll answer your questions to the best of our ability in the order above:
1. We do not have experience using the Golden medium to affix your painting to Yupo. However, if you're simply seeking a white surface to mount your painting to, we would suggest something like our Rising Museum Board, which is a 100% cotton, acid-free, totally archival rigid board. More information can be found here:

An alternative to this would be Saunders Waterford HP paper. More information about this can be found here:

2. We strongly suggest you use a UV protective spray after you've completed your artwork. Here are some links to similar Q&A's on this topic:
