Ask an Expert - Forum > Update and question about Pescia

Hi,

I posted here in April about the unavailability of Magnani Pescia White-- and mid summer was mentioned for its return. So I was pleased to finally see it "in stock" a few weeks ago in mid August, at one of the largest art supply outlets, though only at that one outlet. The other outlets I called had not heard any news of its return. I ordered some and what arrived was either not Pescia or it has been radically changed. It had no deckle edges or watermark, lacked body-- was soft and pliable-- and the surface was fuzzier. Held up to the light it looked patchy. It did not print well, and was also tried by my colleague who does more rugged deep etchings. It simply didn't pick up lighter tones. I called the company and they at first agreed that they must have shipped the wrong paper. So they sent a new batch and it was the same stuff. When I called to again return it, they "investigated" and told me that it was, indeed, Pescia. Now on the website, the white paper is again "out of stock."

I had used Pescia for many years and have not yet found a paper that works better for my drypoints-- for subtlety and sharpness. (I have now tried many papers.) I guess I'm hoping that it is not yet back and that there is come hope it will return with the quality unaltered. It is a sad loss for me if it has come back changed.

Amy information or news would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Amy,

You and I spoke offline, but for those reading this: the MAgnani mill has set up a new piece of equipment. As each paper machine makes slightly different paper, they are are still running trials to perfect the surface so that all characteristics of the Pescia grade are the same. We will personally approve the trials to ensure that the Pescia available for the future is the same as in the past.
