Ask an Expert - Forum > What foil is this?
i keep watching it but it would be easier if i could go find someone selling the cards so i can get a better look at it.
to me it looks like your typical / expensive in line 12 color press w/ cold foil for the metallic areas. -- "cold foil" is just an adhesive they print, then run the sheet over a roller holding foil. the foil stick to the adhesive art and you have shiny gold or silver or whatever color foil you want for the art. this is an expensive process, fyi. cosmetic companies, tooth paste, etc. use this process for their packaging materials to add foil bling. certain presses will also have an in line rotary die cutter to finish the cards.

Thanks for your reply Duane!
Yeah, I really wish I could get my hands on some of the cards he makes, but he only sells to the UK. I wonder if there would be a way to convince him to sell me one, then I can reverse engineer it to find out its materials.
I think I remember him saying in a forum once that he uses an HP inkjet, but he doesn't ever give out details so that may just be misleading.
Maybe I will look at some print companies that offer this cold foil printing and see how much it would be! I'd assume he has a way to do this at home because he only makes a couple cards at a time and takes orders for whatever cards people may want and sells them for a couple pounds. He wouldn't wan't to be losing money in this process.
If anyone else has an idea of what could replicate that effect let me know! He has more videos of different cards on his channel.

He does use a printer! I use the same process. Its rather complicated and there isn't a lot of tutorials out there....my best suggestion would be to check out some sites on gold foil printing and look at some blogs that people have about how to do this! It took me about a year of practice to get this method down right!

I am looking for some paper experts to give me some info I have been trying to get for a while now.
First off I am printing cards, and I'm looking for a very specific look. I have found that look that I am so desperately trying to find, but I don't know what type of paper/foil is used.
So what I am looking for is a metallic look to the image, with a nice sheen to it.
Here is an example of what I am looking for, pretty much this exactly (or duplicated with whatever) You cant quite see it until the light hits it as he moves it around.

In this video you will see a card that has this wonderful metallic sheen that is beautiful. The issue is I have no idea what he uses to get that effect.
What I HAVE tried is some "silhouette silver foil" with some sub par results. Trying that paper is laserjet just covers the shine and where it is white it gets shiney, then with inkjet it shines through a little better, but it doesn't give it that beautiful metallic sheen to the ink like in the video.
any and all advice on printer type/settings and papers/foils is greatly appreciated!
