Ask an Expert - Forum > Paper for stencil-making

I need a paper that can be cut as a stencil in a Silhouette Cameo automated die-cutting machine, but will soften when water is applied so that it can form-fit to a ceramic pot when wet, but act as a stencil once dry. I have heard that bamboo paper may have these capabiliites, or may even be able to form to the pot when dry. Some people have had difficulty cutting bamboo paper in the die-cutting machine and so have put temporary adhesive between two sheets to provide more stability while cutting. I am thinking that maybe your very heavy cardstock might address this problem. What do you think? Have you had any experience using the bamboo paper in a die-cutting machine? Does bamboo paper absorb water and soften so that it could take on the shape of an underlying object?

Thanks so much in advance for any assistance you can provide!

Sounds like you may need a paper that doesn't have a lot of sizing or none at all - possibly a blotting paper which is totally un-sized and when wet probably can be molded to a form. When dried it regains it stiffness. Bamboo papers are sized and harder and will have to be dampened or soaked to soften - have no experience with how they will react with automated die cutting equipment or how they will take the shape of of an underlying object when damp or wet. The prudent approach would be to try some 8.5 x 11 samples of both and see how they perform. You can request samples on our website for the cosmos blotting paper and the bamboo cover stock.
