Hi, I need to order "somerset book" paper to be used for cyanotype. I found that somerset "printmaking paper" did not work for this process, which seems to be more readily available. I have found some websites that say there is a l/w h/w option for somerset book papers, what does that mean? What is the standard somerset book? Are there any other papers that you can recommend that would have a similar qualities (especially not pill up when soaked in water or fall apart) thanks! emiliy
This process requires a paper to have a fair amount of sizing, internal as well as external. The entire Somerset range of printmaking papers, both the cover weights as well as the book weights (lightweight 115gsm & heavyweight 175gsm) are all internally sized but have no surface sizing. Because the process puts the paper through a bath process of clearing a coating applied to the surface you would probably want a paper that has some weight (250gsm or heavier) and also is surface sized to give it better wet strength so it doesn't fall apart during the clearing process. I would recommend you try some watercolor papers that are sufficiently sized to withstand wet media applications. A hot press surface, 300gsm (140#) would probably perform best: try a sheet of Saunders Waterford watercolor paper or Lanaquarelle watercolor paper in the HP surface, 300gsm (140#). You can request samples of both from our website. Let me know how it works for you. MSG
