Great question. You'll often find that comparing a matte (velvet) paper to a semigloss, and pigment inks to dye, are like comparing apples to oranges. Factoring out ink types, the two papers will perform quite differently in respect to color gamut and density in blacks - both of which are wider and higher (respectively) on a semigloss paper.
I suggest you try three of our semigloss/luster papers:
Lasal Exhibition Luster 300 is a single sided heavy weight (300gsm) paper that will feature the weight characteristics that you enjoyed using the velvet paper, however will have a much smoother surface.
Lasal Dual Semigloss 330 is a two-sided paper with a hefty 330gsm weight. We developed this paper for portfolios as the paper exhibits wonderful color gamut yet withstands the handling associated with people flipping through portfolios.
Colorado Fiber Satine 245 is our version of a darkroom fiber paper that's enhanced with a slight texture / fiber look and feel. Of the three, the Colorado will offer you the most amount of surface texture, albeit very subtle.
